Ali Bedni Bugyal Trek Overview

Ali Bedni Bugyal, the largest high altitude alpine meadow in Asia is located in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand. It showcases the Himalayas in their raw form, not just from the summit, but from the moment the trek begins. As soon as you begin trekking from the starting point, you will witness the stunning views that will surely keep you entertained till the end.

You get a beautiful view of the meadows along with majestic mountains in the backdrop. Some of the major peaks you can spot are Nanda Ghunti, Chaukhamba, Neelkanth and Mt. Trishul. As you climb higher to the top of the Bugyals the mountains would slowly unfold more, and you will be able to see more of them. These views are simply amazing and picturesque.

Itinerary

Day 1 – Rishikesh to Lohajung

Altitude: 2,300m / 7,800 ft.

Drive distance: 250 km | 10-11 hrs

Ali Bedni Bugyal Day 1 Lohajung

Your beautiful journey towards Ali Bedni Bugyal will begin today. Today we will drive from Rishikesh to Lohajung. Rishikesh is the spiritual town of India, also known as the Yoga city, while you drive though Rishikesh you can see the vast river Ganga flowing. Your journey from Rishikesh to Lohajung will be approximately 11 hours. You will drive through various picturesque locations, through the zig- zag roads.

On your way to Lohajung, you will cross three of the Panch Prayags, Devprayag, Rudraprayag and Karnaprayag. The Prayags are formed by confluence of the sacred rivers with Alaknanda. Devprayag is the most famous one among these, it is where Alaknanda and Bhagirathi meet to form the holy River Ganga, that flows down through Rishikesh.

As you pass each Prayag you can witness the changing turns of the Alaknanda river. Enjoy the drive with beautiful views, you can see the views changing as you get closer to Lohajung.

As you reach Lohajung you will be greeted with a beautiful view of the Nanda Ghunti Peak. Lohajung is more of a small market area, you can buy essentials here if you need any, but do not fully rely on the market.

There is an interesting folklore revolving around the naming of the village. The locals say that Goddess Parvati had a war (jung) with a demon named Lohasur here and hence the naming of the village.

After reaching Lohajung you can check into the guesthouse, if you reach before sunset you can enjoy the beautiful evening, take short walks around the area to acclimatize yourself.

At night, have a warm dinner and take a rest for the following day.

Day 2 – Lohajung to Didna village

Today will be the first day of trekking in our journey. We will begin our trekking from Lohajung village and trek to Didna village. It is a trek through mixed trails and beautiful views.

In the morning, we will wake up to beautiful views of the mountains. Then we will have a warm breakfast at the Lohajung guest house. After breakfast, we will start trekking towards Didna. The trek begins with a well defined trail in the forest, and follows with ascend and descend through the forest. After trekking through forests for a while we will come across a river, Neelganga. You can pause around the river for a while and enjoy the views around with the loud sound of the gushing river.

After a short pause, be ready for a slightly challenging part. From the river a steep ascent will lead you to Didna village and this stretch can be tiring, so we recommend you to keep taking short breaks and stay hydrated. After ascending for almost 2 hours we will reach Didna village.

Didna is immensely charming and an isolated village with traditional homes. We will spend the night here amid the mountains. Here you can experience the village life and taste their home grown food.

In the evening, take short walks around the village for acclimatization and experience the rich local culture. You will get beautiful frames for photography around the village too. Then at night you can have a good and nutritious dinner at the homestay. Then sleep well for the next day.

Day 3 – Didna to Khobal Tal via Ali Bugyal

Altitude: 3,450 m / 11,300 ft.

Today is the day you will experience the vast, breathtaking meadows that the region is famous for. Today we will trek from Didna village to Khobal Tal, passing through the stunning Ali Bugyal along the way.

Begin your morning with a hearty breakfast to energize for the long day ahead. Once ready, we’ll start our climb towards Ali Bugyal, a spectacular high-altitude meadow that is often regarded as one of the most beautiful in the Himalayas.

The journey begins with a trek through a dense forest offering shade and a serene environment.

As you move ahead, you’ll come across Tolpani, the only water source in this forested stretch. This is a perfect spot to pause, refill your water bottles, and take a short break before continuing. As you cross the forest, the landscape will gradually open up, revealing the expansive, rolling Ali Bugyals.

Here, you’ll find yourself walking along a ridge surrounded by the endless greenery of the meadow, with breathtaking views of Mount Mrigthuni and Mount Trishul in the distance. During the winter, the meadows transform into a pristine wonderland with beautiful snow cover.

Take your time to stroll through the meadow, breathe in the crisp mountain air, and soak in the panoramic views that make this trek so special.

From Ali Bugyal, we will continue trekking towards Khobal Tal, our campsite for the night. Located close to the meadow, Khobal Tal offers an ideal spot to rest after a tiring day. Tonight, you’ll stay in tents under a starlit sky, where the beauty of the night will leave you in awe. After enjoying the peaceful atmosphere and reflecting on the day’s journey, you can sleep well and prepare for the following day.

Day 4 – Khobal Tal to Ghairoli Patal via Bedni Bugyal

Bedni Top: 3,800 m / 12,500 ft

Ghairoli Patal: 10,500 ft

Trek distance: 6-7 km | 4-5 hrs

Today, you’ll experience the charm of another stunning Bugyal. After enjoying your morning tea and breakfast, we will set off on a trek toward the breathtaking Bedni Bugyal. Following a narrow trail through captivating landscapes, you will soon find yourself immersed in the beauty of this high-altitude meadow. Bedni Bugyal offers mesmerizing views, especially in the morning when the surroundings are fresh and vibrant. The sight of majestic peaks like Mt. Chaukhamba, Neelkanth, Nanda Ghunti, and Mt. Trishul towering in the background makes the experience truly unforgettable.

Another beautiful sight you can witness here is the sacred Bedni Kund that is steeped in mythology and renowned as a key site of the Raj Jat Yatra pilgrimage, which occurs every 12 years. This serene pond becomes even more enchanting when it reflects the surrounding peaks, creating a picture-perfect scene.

After exploring and soaking in the beauty around, we will begin descending to Ghairoli Patal, that is the campsite for the night. The trekking trail involves a steep path through picturesque meadows and dense forests. Ghairoli Patal, a serene clearing amid a lush forest, will be your resting place for today. When you reach the campsite, you can relax, enjoy the surroundings.

Day 5 – Ghairoli Patal to Wan then drive to Lohajung

Altitude:

Wan: 2,450 m / 8,100 ft.

Lohajung: 2,300 m / 7,800 ft.

Trek distance: 6-7 km | 5-6 hrs

Drive distance: 16 km | 45 min

Accommodation: Guest house

Today will be the final day of your trekking adventure as you make your way down to Wan, then drive from Wan to Lohajung. You will begin your morning with a refreshing cup of tea and a warm breakfast amid the mountains and crispy breeze. Take a moment to soak in the serene beauty of your surroundings before starting the descent.

For Wan, your trek begins with a steep descent, leading you to the Neelganga River once again. After crossing the river, the trail turns into a gradual ascent. This section can be challenging, so it’s advisable to take short breaks to refresh yourself and enjoy the scenery. A short hike from here takes you to Ran Ka Dhar, a scenic spot where you can pause and rejuvenate before continuing your journey. From Ran Ka Dhar, it’s only a short trek to Wan village, which marks the end of your incredible and soul-stirring trekking experience.

At Wan, vehicles will be waiting to take you on a short drive of less than an hour to Lohajung. Once you reach Lohajung, if you have time, you can explore the local market, buy souvenirs, or simply enjoy a leisurely stroll through the town. In the evening, celebrate the completion of your trek with a final dinner shared with the team, recounting the memorable moments of the journey. End the day with a well-deserved rest, ensuring a good night’s sleep after this fulfilling adventure.

Day 6 – Lohajung to Rishikesh

Drive distance: 250 km | 10 hrs

Today marks the actual final day of your unforgettable journey. Begin your morning with a refreshing cup of tea as you prepare for the long return trip to Rishikesh. To make the most of the day, we’ll depart early in the morning, ensuring we reach there by evening and have enough time to enjoy the long scenic drive ahead.

The journey will take you back along the same picturesque route, offering one last chance to witness the stunning landscapes and cross the three Prayags, Karnaprayag, Rudraprayag and Devprayag. This time, the road will feel different as you reflect on the countless memories and experiences you’ve gathered during the trip.

Once you reach Rishikesh, it’s the end of the wonderful journey and time to say goodbye to your fellow trekkers.

If you want to spend more time in the mountains you can extend your trip to explore the vibrant surroundings. Rishikesh itself offers plenty of sightseeing opportunities, from serene ghats and yoga retreats to adventure activities.
